UCHUMI SUPERMARKETS
Uchumi Supermarkets Ltd was a leading retail company in Kenya that sells food, non-food and textile products as well as general merchandise through a network of Uchumi retail outlets. The company also provides property management services. At its peak, it had 20 stores located in the major towns and cities in Kenya, ranging from hyperbranches to express convenience stores. It was founded in 1975, listed in 1992 and de-listed 30 years later in 2022 following ballooning of arrears owed to its creditors.
From the last published audited accounts in 2016, Uchumi was struggling with decreasing revenue due to stockouts in outlets, the closure of business units (Uganda and Tanzania) and the sale of Ngong Hyper to partially settle balances owed to creditors. Uchumi shared a debt restructuring proposal in 2020 to settle the outstanding secured and unsecured liabilities. If all assets were sold, they could only settle Ksh 731m out of Ksh 8.4 billion owed, implying a deficit of Ksh 7.7 billion.
